Sunnie Skye of Rocky H Farm

Sunnie Skye of Rocky H Farm, affectionately known to us as ‘Skye,’ is a two year old AKC registered silver brindle Scottish terrier out of Jennifer Varnell Hutsell in Athens, Tennessee. She hails from champion lines a few generations back and has the most wonderful personality of any dog we’ve ever met. She’s whipcrack smart and has a beautiful brindle coat pattern that shows best in summer when she’s been shaved close to the skin to ward off the oppressive Alabama heat.

Skye absolute adores children, especially our two young daughters. She tolerates their poking and prodding without so much as an annoyed yawn. Although she’s typically very well behaved on walks, she will try to pull me towards the nearest child she sees to lick their hands and say hello.

We frequently refer to her as ‘The Ambassador Dog,’ as she’s never met another canine that she didn’t like. We occasionally take a litter of rescue pups to foster and socialize before they’re sent up north for adoption, and Skye’s calm, welcoming personality is such a balm for these mostly-feral puppies. Once she’s made them comfortable, she tries to lead them to us entirely on her own. We’ve never trained her to do this, she just seems to innately understand that they need to be taught how kind humans can be.

Of all the dogs I’ve ever owned, Skye is by far and away the easiest to train. She has a deeply rooted desire to please…a trait not often found in others of her breed. She loves obedience training, although she may take her time deciding if she wants to listen to each command with an appropriate level of Scottitude. She is currently in training to compete in EarthDog competitions and we hope to have her finished with her therapy dog certification in January, 2024.
