About Us

Welcome to Dupplin Scotties! We’re so happy that you’re here!

We are a family owned, non-commercial microkennel located in Huntsville, Alabama. Meg is a nurse practitioner working in structural cardiology and Michael is an aerospace engineer with a specialty in modeling and simulation. Our kennel is a passion project, not a career.

Our story started over fifteen years ago with a Scottie that we dearly loved named Tori. At that time, we didn’t understand why she exhibited certain undesirable behaviors such as dog aggression or fearfulness of children. It wasn’t until we discovered her puppy mill origins that we began to educate ourselves on responsible breeding practices.

From then on, we had one mission in mind: produce the highest quality, best socialized Scottish terriers and raise them in the most pampered and loving environment possible. Through rescue work and spreading Tori‘s story, our secondary goal is to prevent others from being hoodwinked into supporting puppy mills in the same manner that we were all those years ago.

Our practices are simple: select only genetically-tested dogs with the best temperament, the lowest possible COI, and never breed any animal who has even carrier traits of genetic illnesses such as Von Willebrand’s disease and craniomandibular osteopathy. We do not breed dogs that demonstrate aggression in any way or who have fearful natures. We socialize our puppies extensively with other animals, children, and friendly strangers in the hopes of preventing any of these issues from popping up later. We also do not utilize the same male over and over again. This practice is leading to the dilution of the genetic diversity within the breed which may have detrimental effects in the years to come.

We aim to keep our prices as low as possible, as financial gain is not a motivating factor for us. We are not a commercial breeder who rely on puppy sales for income. Instead, we are passionate stewards of the Scottish Terrier who wish to make ownership of these incredible dogs as accessible as it can be.

We never have more than two breeding females at a time, and once retired, our dogs stay with us for the remainder of their lives instead of being rehomed and replaced with younger breeding stock. Unlike larger breeding operations, our Scotties are beloved family members first, and breeding animals second. They sleep at our feet and lounge on our furniture instead of spending their lives outdoors in a kennel, and any puppies we produce enjoy the same standard of living while they’re in our care.

We produce litters very infrequently. We are currently expecting a litter of 6-7 puppies, which are due 4/18/25. We do require that any prospective owners to either visit their puppy in person or complete a video chat with us and them prior to formalizing any purchasing plans. Prospective owners are also required to sign a contract that in the event their Scottie should ever need to be rehomed, they’ll be returned to us. For the safety of our babies, we do not ship puppies.
